He became chief planner in 1980 and was named director of Community Mental Health Services in 1984. He was named deputy director of Policy and Program development in 1989 and director of Heart of Missouri Mental Health Services in Columbia in 1993. From 1996-2001 he served as director of Comprehensive Psychiatric Services delivering service to more than 50,000 individuals with mental illnesses. On December 17, 2001 he was appointed Director of the entire Department of Mental Health. BERT STERBENZ Bert is the father of a 34 year-old Down Syndrome man, a retired Professional Engineer, church organist and choirmaster. He was elected president of the Greater St. Louis Parents Advocacy Group for Mentally Retarded Citizens, Inc. in 1996.
